If you've asked another Raleigh parent about part-time childcare, you've probably heard the phrase "Mother's Morning Out"—or its cousins, Parents' Morning Out and Mother's Day Out. They all describe the same beloved Southern institution: a few weekday mornings of loving, usually church-based care, so a parent can work, run errands, schedule appointments, or simply catch their breath.
Here's how these programs work, what to look for, and how our own weekday mornings at Victory Academy fit the pattern.
The idea, in one paragraph
A Mother's Morning Out (MMO) program is part-time by design. Children come for a morning—typically 9AM to noon or 1PM—two, three, or five days a week. The morning has a gentle rhythm: free play, a story, a snack, music, outdoor time, and in church-based programs, a short Bible story and prayer. Then everyone goes home for lunch and a nap. It's not full-time daycare, and that's the point—it's a first step into the classroom for the child, and dependable margin in the week for the parent.
Who it's for
- Parents who don't need full-time care. If you work part-time, work from home, or are home with your children, full-day care is more than you need—and more than you want to pay for.
- Children getting ready for preschool. A morning program is a soft landing: real teachers and classmates, but a short day that ends before anyone is worn out.
- Babies and toddlers, not just preschoolers. Most MMO programs in the Raleigh area take children from infancy—ours start at six weeks.
What it costs in Raleigh
Full-time childcare in Raleigh commonly runs $850–$1,200 a month. Morning-only programs cost a fraction of that because you're only paying for the hours you use. At Victory Academy, published rates start at $217 a month for two mornings a week—every rate is on the site, because price shouldn't be a mystery you have to tour to solve.
Questions worth asking any program
- Who's in the room? Ask about background checks, CPR certification, and whether the same teachers are there every morning.
- Can I see it running? A real program will let you visit during a real morning, with children in the rooms.
- What does the morning actually look like? There should be a rhythm a two-year-old can predict—not just supervised free-for-all.
- How does faith show up? In church-based programs, ask what's actually taught. You should get a specific answer—ours is Bible stories, prayer before snack, and songs children carry home.
- What happens when my child is ready for more? Look for a program with classrooms by age, so the schedule can grow with your child.
How Victory Academy compares
We don't use the Mother's Morning Out name, but our structure is the same one Raleigh families have loved for decades—weekday mornings, 9AM to 12PM, two, three, or five days a week, in a Christian, church-based setting near downtown Raleigh.
